Hi
I just wanted to say to newbies considering surgery that yes it is unpredicatable etc. and yes it's how you heal etc., and yes you should see a surgeon who does MAINLY noses (i.e. not every procedure under the sun).
BUT, something which nobody ever discusses is what you EAT, and swallowing food afterwards. This process involves alot of pulling on the upper mouth and nose area. The pressure can pull on the nose and possibly move things out of place (the bones are often very delicate and easily re-positioned). So you should ALWAYS hold/press your top lip with your finger when swallowing food while the cast is on to minimise movement above.
Also, eating soft/non-chewy foods is essential i.e. soups, baked beans, potato, etc. to minimise risk. Pop it in, and swallow, so no chewing needed!
And something which alot of doctors don't do is use seaweed packing inside the nose to really support it during healing, especially when osteotomies are done. I don't know any US doctors who do this.
I say this after 3 operations and finally being reasonably happy with the outcome, so I have had some experience!
All the best
Tom
